Review on Royal Oak Hotel
For centuries, this Grade-II listed coaching inn has been welcoming travellers to Welshpool, and it continues to provide hospitality and sustenance for locals, tourists and business travellers alike. Following a refit in 2007, the place now sports many contemporary features alongside its thoroughly traditional exposed beams, open fires and wood floors.
The main restaurant is only open for dinner, but there is plenty of interesting stuff on offer. Try baked game pasties with sloe gin and damson jus as a starter, before moving on to seared fillets of sea bass with shellfish bisque or tournedos of beef wrapped in pancetta with béarnaise sauce. For dessert, consider sticky toffee pudding with maple and walnut ice cream. The food is supported by a keenly priced 100-bin wine list.
An all-day menu is served in the bar (10.00am - 9.00pm), where visitors can tuck into sandwiches, paninis, light bites (fishcakes with chilli and lime dressing) and more substantial dishes such as confit of duck, fish and chips or butternut squash risotto.
