Review on The White Horse & Griffin
This one-time coaching inn has stood in the heart of Whitby for more than three centuries, and it has gradually developed into a popular hotel/restaurant serving the needs of locals and visitors alike. Inside, there are three dining areas, all done out in distinctive style.
The kitchen aims to please all-comers, offering 'power breakfasts' (non-residents are more than welcome), as well as a 'fast track' menu of standards like cod and chips or chilli con carne. Fish from the Whitby boats shows up strongly on the main menu (anything from crab salad with new potatoes or lobster Thermidor to sea bass with soused vegetables, rice noodles and steamed clams).
Alternatively, there are steaks, vegetarian options (devilled wild mushroom and thyme crumble) plus eclectic ideas ranging from carpaccio of tuna to noisettes of lamb with caramelised chicory and mustard mash. To finish, share a Swiss chocolate fondue.
