Review on Côte
Situated in the heart of Wimbledon Village, Côte brings a taste of genuine French bistro food to the suburbs. The name conjures up all things Gallic - a neat touch from the owners (who were founding fathers of the Strada chain). A striped awning and pavement tables set the tone, and the interior takes a contemporary view of the 'bistro' theme (expect smart cream and sage colour schemes, oak brown floors and neat finishing touches like bevelled mirrors in place of gingham cloths and posters).
The menu is a classic run through pork and duck rillettes, steak tartare, eggs Benedict, 'hachis parmentier' (French cottage pie) and crêpes chantilly with a strong contingent of regional specialities added to the mix. Traditional pissaladière (warm niçoise flatbread with caramelised onions and anchovies) is a favourite opener, and other treats might include endive and walnut salad with warm Roquefort dressing, scallops with ratatouille and roast duck breast with thyme sauce and creamed leeks. The well chosen wine list is devoted to keenly priced bottles from the French regions.
