Leisure facilities and a fully equipped spa contrast with the history and interior of this luxurious Victorian country manor set in 17 acres of lush parkland and gardens.

At the centre of things is the highly regarded Cedar Restaurant, where visitors can enjoy classy modern food with a broad European accent. Regional raw materials show up in a terrine of smoked Wiltshire ham hock, potato and foie gras with peach chutney, roast fillet of Devon beef, and rump of Dorset lamb with celeriac gratin, roast root vegetables and wild mushrooms.

Fish might range from hand-dived Cornish scallops with black pudding and cauliflower purée to butter-fried Jersey turbot with braised lentils and chorizo, while desserts could run to dark chocolate fondant with raspberry ripple ice cream or coconut and lime parfait with pineapple sorbet.

The wine list is sharply chosen and well connected, with a good range at realistic prices and some little-known surprises. Informal meals are available in the Stables Bar and the Lounge.
