Review on Linthwaite House Hotel
Set in 15 acres of enchanting gardens with its own tarn and spectacular views across to Lake Windermere, Linthwaite House was formerly an Edwardian gentleman's residence – and it still shows in the elegant demeanour of the place and its cultured fittings.
At lunchtime, guests can choose from the Terrace menu while soaking up the vistas. Dinner is served in the more formal surroundings of two opulent mirrored dining rooms with polished antique tables and fine paintings on the walls.
The four-course menu changes daily, but you might begin with a pressing of confit duck, kohlrabi spaghetti and apple 'texture' or seared scallops with curry spices, cauliflower tempura and ginger snap caramel. Main courses show a fondness for local ingredients - Barley Bridge lamb, venison with pearl barley broth and pickled pear, Goosnargh chicken breast with mushroom tabbouleh, salsify and poultry crumb - while desserts could feature iced chocolate and banana parfait with hazelnuts or pineapple 'pain perdu' with Mascarpone and lime. The dazzling selection of British cheeses is one of the finest in the region, and the auspicious global wine list includes a page of classy clarets.
