Our focus here is on the Chapel Down vineyard in Tenterden and The Barnsole Vineyard in Staple, only 2 miles from The Dog Inn. Both vineyards are achieving international recognition for their wines including awards.

2004/5 Canterbury Choice, Pilgrims Harvest (Barnsole Vineyard) £18.95
"South East of England wine award winner, this very drinkable medium dry wine is made with the Huxelrebe Grape"
2003/4 Bacchus Reserve Dry White (Chapel Down Winery) £18.95
"Slate and mineral with delicate hints of citrus and fresh pear on the nose, lime on the palate. Complex lingering fruit"
2003 Nectar (50cl) Sweet White (Chapel Down Winery) £15.95
"Made from the aromatic Siegerrebe with some spicy Ortega, this has a deep rose and redcurrant scented bouquet with sweet pear, apricot and peach on the palate."
2004 Chapel Down Rose (Chapel Down Winery) £18.95
"Delicate smoked salmon colour; English strawberries and redcurrant on the nose and on the palate. Early bottling has captured a spritzy freshness and bright, clean acidity."
2003 Pinot Noir Red (Chapel Down Winery) £26.00
"Sourced from around the South East of England, 60% of the wine is matured in oak. Raspberry, cherry and leather on the nose, echoed on the palate with hints of vanilla."
2001 Pinot Brut Reserve Sparkling (Chapel Down Winery) £32.00
A silver medal winner. A blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. Pale lemon gold colour with green highlights. The acidity is clean and citrusy. The palate has subtle hints of lemon. Superb.

2005 Riesling (Private Bin Villa Maria) £16.50 New Zealand
A well known estate for its Sauvignon but the real gem is this Riesling.
Selva d'Oro (Ricardo Falchini, San Gimignano) £15.95 Italy
A blend of Chardonnay and Vernaccia that is delicious.
2004 Sauvignon de Touraine (Jean-Christophe Mandard, Mareuil-sur Cher.) £14.95 Loire
Really pleasing grapey fruit; crisp and dry.
2003 Riesling (bio dynamic) (Rolly Gassmann, Alsace) £25.50 Alsace
Rich and oily, not completely dry but massively impressive.
2004 Nelson Sauvignon (Neudorf Estate, Tim & Judy Finn) £23.50 New Zealand
Floral gooseberry bouquet with a depth of flavour unusual in Kiwi sauvignons, very classy.

A very popular wine which is easy to drink.
2005 Chenin Blanc (Porter Mill Station Porterville, Malmesbury) £17.50 South Africa
This Loire Valley variety is known as Steen in South Africa where it really thrives. This is a fabulous example. Delicious.

Classy, smoky Sauvignon Blanc from the highly desirable vineyards of Pouilly sur Loire, a stones-throw from Sancerre.

Once a lowly wine encountered on holiday, now this is a wine that needs to be tasted. Great intensity of fruit, not quite as dry as you might expect.
2004 Corbieres blanc (Domaine du Grand Crès, Ferrals-les-Corbières) £21.50 France
This is a big, honeyed, supple dry white wine. Luxurious.
2003 Chablis Premier Cru (Les Vaillons, Jean-Paul Droin) £29.00 Burgundy
Such was the ripeness of the 2003 vintage that the wines of Chablis can seem more like those of Montrachet. Enjoy

Barolo needs a little bit of bottle age to come to its best. 1998 was excellent in Piedmont.

Mature, soft, richly flavoured Cabernet with a sweet, lingering fruit finish.
2003 Mas La Plana (Torres Gran Coronas Black Label) £38.00 Spain
This became famous in the early 1980's when it beat Chateau Latour at a major Paris tasting. The wine went off form in the early 90's but is now absolutely back on top form.
1999 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet /Shiraz (Penfolds South Australia) £32.50 Australia
The upper end wines of the Penfolds range are really good.
