Review on The Black Horse
Another addition to the forward-looking Peach Pubs Company stable, this Black Horse has been around long enough to justify the title 'Woburn's local'. The building - dating back to Georgian times - stands in the middle of the village, within easy reach of the abbey, golf course and safari park.
The new regime trades on quality and flexibility: food is available throughout the day (we have listed times for à la carte meals) and you can have anything from a snack or a sandwich to afternoon tea or the full three courses. Deli boards with an array of cheeses, charcuterie, seafood and dips are bestsellers, and many other dishes such as free-range chicken Caesar salad can be ordered as starters or mains.
The char grill comes into its own for surf 'n' turf, homemade cheese burgers and so on, and the repertoire also extends to smoked salmon fishcakes, Irish stew and wild mushroom pappardelle with cep cream and truffle oil. To finish, try rosewater pannacotta or Baileys brûlée with vanilla shortbread. Backing up the food are well-kept real ales and a compact wine list including plenty by the glass.
