Review on The Pot Kiln

TV chef and presenter Mike Robinson had his very first pint in the Pot Kiln and, many years down the line, he decided to buy the place and run it as his very own pet project. These days, beer comes from the West Berkshire Brewery, (which began in outbuildings behind the pub before moving to bigger premises in nearby Yattendon) and the pub is still a haven for drinkers.

Even so, food is now top of the agenda – as you might guess from a man who spends much of his time demonstrating his skills on UKTV. Cooking game and wild food is one of his passions, witness dishes like warm salad of wood pigeon with crispy bacon and black pudding, slow-braised wild rabbit with rosemary and garlic, or pavé of fallow deer with juniper jus.

Away from the hunt and the shoot, you will also see grilled goats' cheese and fig salad, sole Véronique and slow-cooked ham hock with pease pudding, parsley and caper sauce, followed by desserts like honeycomb parfait or hazelnut and chocolate torte.

    All Food & No Flummery

Top quality ingredients beautifully cooked. Great game dishes, brilliant West Berkshire Beers and some good wines at the top of a fairly priced wine list.
Have been several times and have left feeling that all is well with the world on every occasion.

Designated driver needed to enjoy to the full

    Oh Dear....

I chose this pub to celebrate both my birthday & retirement as I'd heard & read good reviews about it.

One starter ordered was wood pigeon, it was so tough a steak knife had to be used to cut it, 1st black mark.

A member of my family is allergic to onions and, as all the sauces are pre-made, the waiter asked the chef to make something up - he did, a very nice green colour that was absolutely tasteless considering it was to to accompany deer which is quite distinct in taste. The roast potatoes were very nice and crispy on the outside but on the hard side of done on the inside, the roasted veg were too oily for me but others may like it that way. Surely a good chef could do better. 2nd black mark

The wine we chose was unavailable but more expensive ones were recommended..... nice try. 3rd black mark

Coffee was served without a chocolate or biscuit of some sort - nearly always get one in most good coffee shops. 4th black mark

The service was good so not all bad but the general opinion of 5 people was that of disappointment, I've still got a heavy heart that I chose this pub for a very special milestone in my life. :-(
