Review on Little Barwick House
Surrounded by three acres of delightfully tranquil gardens on the edge of Barwick village (a short drive south of Yeovil), Tim and Emma Ford's Georgian dower house functions perfectly as a country restaurant-with-rooms. The dining room has been given a fresh new look of late, with watercolours on the walls, hand-painted striped wallpaper and exposed floorboards. It makes a suitably light and elegant setting for Tim Ford's assured cooking.
Tim changes his menus to reflect what the local markets and trusted suppliers can provide. France and the Mediterranean are the main influences - witness pan-fried duck foie gras with poached baby figs and lime-infused sauce, saddle of wild roe deer with a crispy confit of pork belly, beetroot purée and rösti, or fillets of Cornish sea bass served on aubergine caviar with roasted fennel.
To finish, two can share the assortment of tiny Little Barwick desserts; otherwise try something fruity like iced mango parfait with orange confit or coconut delice with marinated pineapple and pineapple sorbet. The starry wine list is global in its coverage and includes a noteworthy collection of half bottles.
