Review on Hotel du Vin & Bistro
Part of a well established group, Hotel du Vin York is an elegant Grade II listed property in the Mount area of York, dating back to the early 18th century it has had many guises in its former life, a private home, an orphanage and more recently the Shepherd Homes building. It has now been updated in typical fashion along the lines of other HDV hotels and boasts an elegant interior with a contemporary design, whilst respecting the buildings historical features.
The menu, including daily specials features classic French bistro fare with a contemporary edge, using fresh first-class locally sourced ingredients. Typical offerings on the carte are devilled lambs kidneys served on granary toast with a parsley and shallot salad or escargot bourguignon, snails roasted in their shells with garlic and herb butter. Main courses take in oven roasted pork belly served with meaux mustard dauphinoise and Agen prune sauce or monkfish Grand–Mère garnished with pearl onions, pancetta and wild mushrooms. Desserts bring on board such delights as crêpes Suzette flambé, crêpes drenched in Grand Marnier and orange sauce or brioche and banana pain perdu, paired with a rum and raisin ice cream.
There is an excellent wine list to accompany the food, with ample choice across the range, including offerings by the glass and daily specials.
