Review on Russells of Coppergate
Almost as much of a local landmark as the nearby Minster, Russells of Coppergate is unashamedly a restaurant of the old-school, dealing in hearty helpings of robust English and international food, mighty roasts and dishes that are a world away from the high-flown creations of 'contemporary' restaurants. Instead of foams, drizzles and purées, expect creamy sauces, copious vegetables and nursery puds.
Call in for morning coffee and pastries, relax with afternoon tea and watch the world go by, or go the whole hog with a full lunch or dinner. There might be Yorkshire pudding and onion gravy to start and sherry trifle or bread-and-butter pudding to finish; in between, check the carvery or settle for steak in a copper pot, chicken in mushroom sauce or even tuna with lemon and capers. To finish, there's a full menu of ice cream specialities and sundaes.
