Ring the doorbell to gain entrance to Ciro and Linda Zaino's curious hexagonal Regency house in a quiet mews a short stroll from Penzance seafront. The aptly named Summer House is a seductive little restaurant-with-rooms that is suffused with sunny Mediterranean colour and atmosphere. An Italianate courtyard garden with lush plants in terracotta pots makes the ideal spot for al fresco meals, or you can soak up the enchanting atmosphere in the yellow dining room.
Zino's cooking is pure rustic Mediterranean and his concise dinner menu goes straight for the target. Begin with medallions of char-grilled duck and marinated red peppers ahead of 'triglie portofino' (fillets of red mullet with tomatoes, black olives and basil) or rack of lamb with 'herbes de Provence' (a house speciality). To finish, there might be warm apple tart laced with Calvados or a 'mosaic' of summer fruits in Grappa with mango coulis. The all-Italian, 40-bin wine list is bursting with good stuff at very realistic prices.
