Yes, this early eighteenth-century inn really was once the local smithy, and it was extended so that refreshments could be dispensed while horses were being shod. These days, however, it's better known for its genial hospitality and robust food as well as its locally brewed real ales and numerous wines by the glass (up to 20 in all).
You can eat in the bar or the adjoining Old Forge restaurant. The menu is all straightforward stuff, ranging from chicken and pistachio pâté to beer-battered haddock and chips or vegetable curry. Added to this are a few more adventurous blackboard specials like venison and Guinness casserole and shoulder of lamb with mint, honey and garlic.
The location, close to Talkin Tarn, is delightful and a great base for walkers.
