Mobile Food Guide Review of The SamlingA few hundred feet above one of the most beautiful lakes in Britain, The Samling manages to combine all the virtues of a classy Lakeland 'hotel in the country' with the pedigree of a top restaurant. It's said that Wordsworth paid his rent here and there is still much to enjoy if you fancy strolling through woodland, fields and landscaped gardens on the 67-acre estate. Otherwise, the tone is comfortably stylish rather than snootily nostalgic – especially in the restaurant, where stripped wooden floors and beige walls are the order of the day. A few luxury ingredients appear here and there, but there's also an earthy undercurrent to dishes like sweet-cured ham and parsley ballotine with piccalilli and Mrs Kirkham's cheese souffle or noisette of Kendal rough fell lamb with 'hotpot potatoes' and wild garlic. Elsewhere, starters show a light, contemporary touch, as in pan-fried diver-caught scallops with red pepper sabayon and saffron oil, while desserts provide a few clever twists such as iced Bramley apple crumble with blackberries and custard. The wine list divides into around 30 'house wines' and a shorter slate of 'fine wines' with prices to match. The Samling's owners, Tom's Companies, recently moved their defunct Newcastle restaurant, Treacle Moon in to the hotel and ambitious plans are in the pipeline.
