Review on Tufton Arms Hotel
Holding pride of place in the centre of the medieval market town of Appleby, the Tufton Arms is a stylishly restored Victorian coaching house now run as a charming hotel by the Milsom family.
Dinner is served in the elegant Conservatory Restaurant overlooking the cobbled mews courtyard. The kitchen works to an Anglo-French menu that makes good use of local produce. Roast rack of Cumbrian fell lamb might be served on a rösti with red wine and mint jus, while baby fillets of beef are served on a duo of white and dark sauces. Fish also shows up well in the shape of, say, pan-fried monkfish with a potato and smoked haddock broth, Dover sole with nut brown butter and fillets of sea bass on a bed of spinach with Champagne sauce.
Burgers, omelettes and pasta dishes are served in the bar, and the wine list is an impressive selection of more than 160 bins, which have been expertly chosen for value and distinction.
