Mobile Food Guide Review of Corse Lawn House Hotel
Fronted by an ornamental pond (once used as a 'wash' into which a stage coach with four horses could be driven), this delightful Queen Anne residence has been lovingly nurtured by members of the Hine family since 1978. It's a place that lives and breathes gentrified, old-fashioned Englishness. After years at the stoves, Baba Hine is now confining herself to affable front-of-house duties, with the culinary baton firmly in the hands of long-serving chef, Andrew Poole. The food still has an obvious Anglo-French slant, and the owners care about ingredients: they have even made an environmental stand by banishing all 'endangered' species of fish from the kitchen. Even so, there's ample choice on the big menu: start with foie gras terrine or baked queen scallops with Provençal stuffing ahead of pigeon breasts with red wine, red cabbage and black sausage or char-grilled fillet of line-caught sea bass with cauliflower cream and caper dressing. The award-winning British cheeseboard is a must, and desserts range from hot passion fruit soufflé to honey and walnut tart with toffee cream. If you are looking for something more casual, try the Bistro, where the menu promises everything from sandwiches and plates of home-smoked salmon to traditional roast grouse in season. The wine list is a well-bred French aristocrat – as you might expect from the Hine family's 'Cognac connections' – although there are prestigious selections from elsewhere and an enviable choice of around 60 half-bottles.
