The opulence of the fabulously restored Stock Exchange Hall – complete with its marble pillars and huge domed ceiling – makes an impressive backdrop for this contemporary rendezvous.

Italy rules on the menu, where good bets are the authentic homemade pasta and fish dishes. Gnocchi cooked with Italian pork sausages, fennel, cherry tomatoes and chilli is a signature dish, likewise the warm seafood platter.

Other options worth considering are peppered pigeon breast set on watercress and citrus salad, corn-fed guinea fowl stuffed with leeks and Ricotta cheese, and veal loin steak served with spinach, Gorgonzola and cream.

The wine list is an Italian corker, with reds to the fore but a broad sweep of bottles from premier league regional producers.
