London's first organic gastropub (fully certified by The Soil Association) occupies a nineteenth-century hostelry in the back streets of Islington. Since 1998 it has been flying the flag while maintaining all the spirit and character of an honest community pub: no jukeboxes, fruit machines or TV screens disturb the peace.
The kitchen deals in uncomplicated seasonal food based on good ingredients. Menus change twice daily and the results are rustic with regional European twists. In summer, the possibilities might include pan-fried red mullet with linguine, lemon and chilli, char-grilled chicken thighs with sun-dried tomato, sweet potato and parsley salad, and watermelon and Tequila granita. In winter, expect celeriac chick pea and cabbage soup, grilled venison steak with spinach and chips, and treacle tart.
The pub's green credentials extend to its range of drinks, which include a fine selection of organic beers and lagers mostly from the Pitfield, Freedom and St Peter's Breweries; there are ciders and organic spirits too and a list of 40 accredited wines from small independent winemakers.
