Mobile Food Guide Review of The Lavender HouseA famous sixteenth-century thatched listed building is now home to Richard Hughes' restaurant The Lavender House, just 10 minutes drive from Norwich. As chef/proprietor he has been described by some of his customers as 'a legend in his own lunchtime'. He is an industrious soul, beavering away at the stoves and always creating new ideas and surprises. His menus are essentially three courses, but there are lots of little extras to tease the palate: perhaps warm Cheddar fritters in the bar, a little cup of North Norfolk mussel broth as a pre-starter, and a signature lavender crème brûlée to eat while you consider desserts. Local producers and suppliers are listed on the menu, which might kick off with a little salad of Sheringham lobster with potted crab, brown shrimps, samphire and St Peter's Stout dressing (a real taste of East Anglia) before – say – roast Lowestoft cod with seared scallop, fried anchovy and shellfish minestrone or local partridge with seasonal baked pumpkin, onion tart and sherry gravy. A full vegetarian menu is also available and – as a finale – you might go for apple tart with cider custard. Additional Restaurant Information for The Lavender House - Brundall
