Punts tie up alongside the Cherwell Boathouse and relaxation beckons at this long-serving Oxford restaurant. The Verdin family set up shop here almost 40 years ago and their casual venue continues to go from strength to strength. In recent times it's undergone something of a renaissance, with a brightly lit conservatory now tacked onto the original premises – although most people are still drawn to the glorious terrace by the banks of the Cherwell.
The kitchen shows off its English allegiance with dishes such as duck and black pudding terrine or Lancashire hotpot with celeriac purée, although French influences are never far away. Saffron-marinated scallops might be served with crushed celeriac and balsamic jus, roast quail appears with parsnip purée, caramelised salsify and thyme foam, and desserts span everything from chocolate rice pudding to pineapple tarte Tatin with cardamom ice cream.
The wine list is a rare treat for anyone visiting the Boathouse: there are pages of pedigree selections spanning the globe, mouth-watering possibilities from the French regions and ample choice by the glass.
