Just 20 minutes from Glasgow city centre, The Beardmore is a substantial modern hotel on the banks of the Clyde with superb leisure facilities. A recent refit has seen the launch of the Arcoona fine dining restaurant, named after a passenger ship built by William Beardmore & Co on the site in 1924.
Inside, the dining room is chic and spacious, with polished wood floors, well-spaced tables and drapes at the windows. The kitchen works to a menu of assured contemporary dishes with French and Mediterranean overtones. To begin, there might be seared red mullet with wilted summer leaves and carrot escabeche or confit terrine of chicken, ham hock and duck with sweet vegetable pickle. Main courses could take in fillet of John Dory with artichoke and pea casserole as well as breast of corn-fed chicken with herb risotto, red wine and cep jus.
When it comes to desserts, you might fancy warm banana fondant with coconut ice cream or strawberry and fig tart with almond sherbet. Meals are interspersed with lots of fashionable extras, and the well-spread wine list includes a decent choice by the glass.
