'Eat together, grow together, be together' seems to be the message behind Food for Friends, this ground-breaking and effervescent restaurant in The Lanes. Since opening its doors in 1981 it has become a by-word for inventive vegetarian food in Brighton, and new owners are planning to move things forward even further.
Food for Friends has always worn its ecological heart on its sleeve, staunchly supporting organic and sustainable farming, avoiding all GM products and taking a global view of things. What it offers is 'food inspired by the world at a time when the world needs to be inspired by food' – at least that's what it says on the menu.
Grilled Haloumi and pineapple sticks with rocket salad and chilli sauce is a typical starter, while main courses generally include a daily stir-fry and pasta dish (perhaps linguine with gremolata sprinkles, shaved Parmesan and pesto with a cream of porcini sauce and toasted citrus breadcrumbs) as well as dishes like field mushroom Stroganoff and quesadillas with re-fried beans.
There are amazing South Indian thalis for two and you can even create your own meal on a plate from the array of olives, nachos, samosas, hummus and the like. Breads, dips and dressings come in all manner of flavours and there's a special mini-menu of 'food for kids'. Needless to say, all wines, juices and other drinks have an organic tag.
