Coriander brings a delightfully rustic, Mediterranean feel to the neighbourhood close to Hove seafront, and it's a perfect backdrop to the colourful, exotic food on offer in this hugely popular restaurant.
'Around 90% of our dishes are organic' say the owners, and Coriander's ecological credentials extend to procuring fish only from sustainable sources, plus dedicated recycling and using bio-degradable cleaning materials.
Influences and flavours are pulled from the global melting pot, with the emphasis on the Moorish tradition that stretches through the Middle East via North Africa to Latin America. Tilapia fishcakes with buttered couscous, spiced tomato, saffron and ginger sauce is a typically exotic starter before, say, Cape Malay seafood curry; chick pea, apricot and sun-dried tomato tagine; or char-grilled Charolais beef fillet with cassoulet.
Closer to home, you might also find mushroom, walnut and Stilton pie or Pugh's Piglets Cumberland-orange sausage with mash, grain mustard, onion gravy and braised red cabbage. As a finale, check out saffron and rosewater crème brûlée with honey-roasted figs or Sudanese coffee with baklava, stuffed dates and fruit.
The deli next door has an astonishing range of foods and provisions, mostly prepared in Coriander's restaurant kitchen.
