Hunstrete is the epitome of gentrified Englishness: the house itself - a Georgian country mansion - is set in over 70 acres of deer park and woodland on the fringes of the Mendip Hills. The classical backdrop is mirrored by the interior, which is lavishly furnished with antiques, original paintings and fine porcelain.
At the heart of the house is the Terrace Restaurant, a luxurious dining room done out in pastel shades with an Italianate flower-filled courtyard visible from its windows.
Pickings from the restored walled gardens find their way into the kitchen, along with a commendable amount of local produce. The emphasis is on finely tuned modern dishes in the mould of - say - sautéed diver-caught scallops with a vegetable and chive broth, loin of Mendip venison with St Maure goats' cheese, croquette potatoes, braised figs and Cassis jus, and desserts such as a dark chocolate teardrop with white chocolate mousse, lavender sorbet and anglaise tuiles.
The Hunstrete wine list is one of the finest in the south west, with over 250 bins offering an exciting mix of high-flyers and good-value drinking - especially from Bordeaux and Burgundy.
