Superlatives come easily when talking about this instantly alluring and enchanting Elizabethan manor house set in 1,000 acres of awe-inspiring grounds. Be prepared to be seduced by its elegant charms. For 50 years, Gravetye Manor was home to William Robinson, the Victorian godfather of 'natural gardening' and famed for his bible 'The Wild Garden'. The results of his labours have been meticulously preserved for all to see: stroll around the grounds and marvel.
Heading up the kitchen is Scottish born Rupert Gleadow who describes his cuisine as modern British although you will find influences from further afield. Local supplies and pickings from the restored kitchen garden are married with global ingredients to produce a seasonal menu with a choice of six or seven dishes for each course.
Starters of cumin roasted scallops, cauliflower purée, coriander salad and curry foam or pan fried pavé of foie gras, toasted brioche, purée of prunes and Sauternes jelly could give way to herb crusted rack of new season lamb with a warm salad of Jersey Royals and marsh samphire, garden peas and light lamb jus. While roast breast of Szechuan crusted 'Dombes' duck, sauté of palm hearts and spiced peach with Hoi Sin sauce goes all-out for oriental wizardry. Desserts are equally inviting ideas like Raspberry Soufflé with raspberry ice cream or baby pineapple tarte Tatin with pineapple panna cotta and purple basil sorbet.
The Gravetye Manor wine cellar is one of the most aristocratic and majestic in the land. There is good breeding and glorious drinking at every turn, whether you are looking for a classic vintage or a sprightly newcomer.
