Review on Bazil Brasserie at The Windsor Hotel
The Bazil is making something of a splash in Whitley Bay: it's part of the grand Windsor Hotel on South Parade, but it's a world away from the clichés of provincial hotel restaurants. Instead it offers lively brasserie cooking in surroundings that are very much in tune with the times.
The kitchen deals in global ideas, but makes the best use possible of North Country produce. From the Far East you might notice Thai fishcakes with lime crème fraîche or skewers of tandoori-style chicken served with braised pilau rice and a chilled cucumber, mint and yoghurt salsa; from nearer home expect bowls of Scottish mussels and dishes like grilled goats' cheese with sun-blush tomatoes and caramelised red onion or breast of duck with fondant potato, sugar snap peas and black cherry jus.
Steaks and grills are also on offer, specials flesh out the repertoire and desserts could range from apple and rhubarb crumble to Turkish Delight crème brûlée.
'Early bird' menus (5.30 to 6.30pm, Mon to Fri) are great value and the wine list picks up plenty of respectable names from around the world.
