Mobile Food Guide Review of Brasserie Forty 4
Part of The Calls complex down by the waterside, this enduring brasserie has expanded to take the room occupied by Pool Court at 42 after the shutters came down on that venerable old establishment at the end of 2005. The mood is relaxed and the décor is embellished with mirrors, black lacquered floors and dangling silver tassels. The menu is stylish, cosmopolitan and appealing, with starter-sized offerings that could include spiced lamb parcels with cucumber 'spaghetti' and mango pickle, smoked salmon with buckwheat blinis or Thai fishcakes. More substantial main courses are in the same mould, taking in herb-crusted salmon with black tagliatelle, teriyaki mackerel accompanied by spicy pineapple, and confit of duck with red cabbage, poached figs and port sauce. Die-hards might opt for potted shrimps followed by cottage pie, and the list of puddings is headlined by the indulgent delights of Brasserie 44's famous chocolate fondue; otherwise go for Spanish almond cake with Solera sherry or passion fruit and mango vacherin. Speedy two-course lunches do their job, and the auspicious, 200-bin wine list scours the globe in search of top-end drinking. Additional Restaurant Information for Brasserie Forty 4 - Leeds
