Dating from 1437 – or thereabouts – this ancient building has had a colourful history over the years, including stints as a brothel and a banana warehouse. As 19 Grape Lane, it became one of York's best-known culinary addresses, right at the end of the city's tourist trail.

New chef/proprietor Phil Upton is a seasoned local campaigner and he has given the oak-beamed interior a restrained facelift, as well as amending the restaurant's name. Little else has changed. If the door is left open you can still hear the yells from the children and madcaps as the famous Ghost Walk passes by; upstairs, 'Table 9' is still the best seat in the house if you want to watch the spectacle from the windows overlooking cobbled Swinegate.

Dinner might begin with chicken and artichoke terrine with warm brioche or scallops with raisins and caper dressing, while main courses might run to herb-rolled local lamb with Savoy cabbage and pesto or roast halibut with saffron-infused seasonal vegetable broth. To finish, try iced nougat with three melon and blueberry sauce or 'strawberries and cream' shortcake.

The 'Ladies Lunch & Light Bites' menu attracts shoppers and tourists ('gents are welcome, too') with its crowd-pleasing selection of brasserie staples along the lines of Caesar salad, smoked haddock fishcakes and 'steak au poivre' burgers, while the wine list promises plenty of fairly priced drinking from around the globe.
