Locanda Cipriani restaurant and rooms is located on the tranquil island of Torcello on the north eastern side of the Venetian lagoon, just 10km from St Marks Square. Established in 1934 by Giuseppe Cipriani, founder of the iconic Harrys' Bar in Venice, it is now run by his grandson and wife Bonifacio and Daniela Brass. A long standing favourite with English royalty and celebrities, it was made famous by literary legend Ernest Hemingway who wrote 'Across the River and through the Trees' during his stay here.
The restaurant with its simple décor and elegant furnishings is divided into two rooms with large windows overlooking the flower-filled garden, where it is lovely to dine during the summer months. Head chef is Cristian Angiolin who serves the reinvented culinary delights now considered Cipriani classics such as carpaccio and John Dorry alla Carlina, together with a menu including a range of dishes featuring fish, vegetables, home-made pasta and rice.
