Mobile Food Guide Review of GreensRob and Emma Green are making a great success of their amicable neighbourhood restaurant on the Abbey side of the swing bridge in Whitby. There's a touch of sophistication about the dining room with its dark-brown walls and rough wooden tables and the menu is a constantly changing affair dictated by the seasons and the market. Fish from Whitby harbour is a big draw, and the specials board lists the day's catch from named boats. Deep-fried salt-and-pepper squid is a signature dish and the piscine contingent might extend to tempura of langoustines with mild red Thai curry sauce, fillet of line-caught halibut with baby spring vegetables, rosemary and truffle broth, and turbot with Dover sole mousse, sautéed potatoes and hollandaise sauce. Meat eaters are also looked after with carnivorous options such as carpaccio of Yorkshire beef, a trio of Ryedale lamb with fresh peas and minted gravy, and pork chop from Malton served with black pudding and potato rösti, apple chutney and a reduction sauce. Sticky toffee pudding and cherry clafoutis with chocolate sorbet are typical desserts. Greens also has its own 'deli', so you can buy all kinds of homemade provisions to take home.
