Mobile Food Guide Review of Castle of Comfort
There are enticing views of the Bristol Channel and the Welsh coast from this delightful, personally run country house hotel on the northern slopes of the Quantock Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). The Grade II-listed building – originally a sixteenth-century inn 'where it is rumoured that pirates off the English coast used to dispose of their loot' – has been sympathetically refurbished. Carol and Nigel Venner are a charming couple who make everyone most welcome, whether they are families on holiday or business people on the road. Their restaurant has an excellent reputation and Carol's efforts in the kitchen are full of surprises. Her fixed-price menus (have two or three courses) take in cosmopolitan ideas like griddled scallops with hot pineapple salsa, peppered fillet of Somerset beef with port and Exmoor Blue sauce, rack of local lamb and desserts ranging from caramelised rice pudding with blueberry compote to mango crème brûlée.
