Kate Moore oversees proceedings out front, while Jonathan cooks at this friendly, unassuming restaurant-with-rooms in the centre of Newton Poppleford. Their restaurant looks spick and span with its light decorative touches, fresh flowers and neat table settings.
Jonathan changes his fixed-price menus almost every day and his cooking shows a light touch and sympathetic use of Devon's native produce. To begin there might be venison terrine wrapped in char-grilled courgettes or a salad of smoked salmon and Dartmouth Smokehouse prawns with citrus vinaigrette, ahead of sea bass fillet with mussel risotto and saffron cream or slow-braised leg of organic Creedy Carver duck on leek mash with ginger and spring onion jus.
To conclude, expect desserts such as dark chocolate and walnut fudge brownie, Rocombe Farm ice creams and West Country cheeses with apple and cider chutney. The unpretentious list of around two dozen wines offers good value across the board. Afternoon teas are served in the conservatory.
