Since opening its doors in December 2004, the Old Bakery has become one of Lincoln's hot spots with a fistful of accolades to its credit (including 2 AA Rosettes, a 'Profit through Passion' award from Lincolnshire Tourism in 2007 and Gold Award winners in the East Midlands Tourism 'Enjoy England Excellence Awards 2007' in the Taste of England category. More recently The Old Bakery has scooped the Lincolnshire Life / House of Townend Restaurant of the year 2008/9 award and are winners of the Silver Award in the 'Taste of England' category of Enjoy England National Finals 2008.
The original building – in the heart of Lincoln's 'cathedral quarter' – was a working bakery until 1954 and is now enjoying a new lease of life as a highly popular restaurant-with-rooms. The kitchen has kept faith with the past by teaming up with nearby Ellis Mill, which supplies traditionally milled flour for the home-baked bread served in the dining room.
Local produce also looms large in the shape of Lincoln Red beef fillet (perhaps a tartare with poached quail egg, toasted rye bread and green tomato chutney) or locally reared hay and fresh herb slow roasted boneless Gloucester Old Spot baby pig with stir fried garlic potato, smoked pancetta cream and apple & plum jam. The menu ranges far and wide, taking in everything from prosciutto of ostrich fillet marinated in "vanilla fleur de sel", warm edamame beans and black pepper salad with avocado & extra virgin oil to caramelized chicken breast with fresh chili and ginger, roasted acorn squash with lime cream sauce. Fish is from Grimsby, herbs are grown in the kitchen garden, and the awesome cheese selection comes from Lincoln's excellent Cheese Society. Also, don't leave without trying Ivano de Serio's homemade ice creams.
