From the outside, you might think this was just another Wiltshire roadside pub, but the interior tells a different story. Look around and you'll see dark panelled walls hung with old paintings, heavy rustic furniture, shelves lined with homemade preserves and a blackboard menu that is anything but 'pubby'.
Experienced new owners Michelle and Philip Hale with Chris Day have effortlessly filled the gap left by the retirement long-time incumbents Tim and Helen Withers. Rowde is deep in landlocked Wiltshire, but the George and Dragon's reputation has always hinged on brilliant seafood – and the current team is not about to change any of that.
Supplies arrive four of five times a week from Cornwall, and the menu offers a fine selection of appealing ideas: steamed black bream with spinach and garlic, roast monkfish with parsnip mash and red wine jus, lobster linguine, for example.
There are also a few concessions to meat eaters in the shape of slow-roast belly pork with Chinese spiced cabbage or a cassoulet of Wiltshire sausages, while puds could include plum crumble and brown sugar meringues with jersey cream.
No need to drive home after dinner now that they have opened 3 new luxury bedrooms, each individually designed and including flat screen TV's, DVD players and i-pod docking stations.
