Trelowarren is the bright new face of tourism in Cornwall. The 1000-acre private estate on the Lizard peninsula has been transformed into a 'green', eco-friendly enterprise, with the aim of becoming totally self-sufficient in fuel and food.
There's been a restaurant of sorts in the converted carriage house by the old stable yard for a good many years. Head Chef is Olly Jackson who is keen to source the finest local, seasonal ingredients and produce for his menu, vegetables come from Cusgarne, cheeses from Menallack Farm, oysters, mussels, and scallops hand-dived from the Helford and of course game, eggs and herbs come from the Estate.
It's an all-day set-up, opening with breakfast, moving on to light lunches of soup, salads and burgers, progressing through afternoon tea until dinner comes around. The menu is shot through with local and regional influences, witness Cornish blue cheese mousse served with herb shortbread, spiced apple and celery confit, Mr. Retallack's fillet steak accompanied by thyme-scented sauté potatoes, wild mushrooms, red wine and shallots or fresh lobsters direct from the tank.
Cheeses are – of course – provided by Cornish producers, while desserts could take in anything from brioche and lemon curd pudding with cinnamon and almond cream to hot chocolate fondant with whisky ice cream.
