Review on Ye Olde Gate Inne
'Well-off-the-beaten-track' (to put it mildly!), 'The Gate' is reached via lonely roads with nothing but the hills of the Peak District on either side. Even so, walkers regularly rest up here after trekking along the High Peak Trail.
Part of the allure is the pub's untarnished atmosphere: you feel that not a great deal has changed since the seventeenth century, when the place first opened its doors. Some of aged oak beams were salvaged from ships sunk during the Spanish Armada, warmth comes a huge inglenook fireplace with a black-leaded range, and the floors are still flagstones.
There are pleasant views of the garden from the panelled dining room, where visitors can eat from a blackboard menu that ranges it far and wide, from old pub favourites like beef braised in ale or Lancashire hot pot to exotica such as braised lamb shank with garlic and preserved lemons, Thai green chicken curry, and marinated monkfish kebabs. Desserts are wholesome offerings such as treacle tart or fruit crumble. 'The food was heaven on a plate,' concluded one happy Mobile Food Guide user.
