'Public House and Dining Rooms' is the billing for this revamped Grade II-listed seventeenth-century hostelry tucked away in an archetypal Clifton mews.
Wooden chairs and tables are set out at the front of the building and the interior is the result of a classic gastro pub reclamation job: exposed wooden floors, an open brick fireplace, 'heritage' colour schemes – you know the kind of thing. Upstairs is a more formal dining room, although you are free to eat just about anything anywhere in the place.
Home-cured charcuterie, slow-braised dishes, soups and ploughman's are pub staples at lunchtime, but the kitchen revs up for more ambitious stuff in the evening, including Bath chaps with white onion purée and grain mustard, a plate of new season's lamb with peas, morels and red wine or 'British shellfish to share'. Finish with Queen of Puddings soufflé (retro with a twist), or a combo of chocolate tart, stout ice cream and caramel kromeski. Brunch is a big attraction at weekends.
