The oldest building in the ancient farming village Brearton can sometimes feel like the ultimate local – comfortable but unpretentious, full of atmosphere and character without ever seeming twee, and offering the prospect of good food and drink to boot.
Beer drinkers can take their pick from a brigade of handpumps listing much-sought-after brews, and two dozen enthusiastically described wines are there for those who fancy a taste of the grape. Up on the blackboard is a lively menu that zooms around the world for inspiration: on a typical day, you might spot char-grilled chicken breast with warm potato and chorizo salad, pan-fried haddock in Cajun spices or potato and tomato curry; there are North Country diehards, too, in the shape of game pie, haddock in beer batter or sausage and mash. Puddings are in a similar vein, ranging from apple and bramble crumble to treacle tart.
