In the heart of Norwich's upwardly mobile 'Golden Triangle' not far from the University, the Mad Moose is related to The Wildebeest Arms at Stoke Holy Cross. MM continues to improve by leaps and bounds, thanks largely to the opening of '1Up' - a trendy, bistro-style restaurant on the first floor of the pub. It's been decorated in shades of purple, with bare 'Conran-style' tables and wooden floors - and it feels very swish.
Pan-fried fillet of mackerel with chorizo, curly kale and apple crisps is a typically upbeat starter, and it sets the tone for main courses ranging from roast fillet of sea bream with saffron potatoes and North Norfolk samphire to rump of lamb with creamed haricot beans or Scotch ribeye steak with chips and aïoli. Crème brûlée is a satisfying dessert or you might throw caution to the wind and order peanut butter parfait with glazed bananas.
In the crowded downstairs bar you can drink beer and tuck into pub fare ranging from Cumberland sausages with onion gravy to Thai fishcakes and crispy chilli chicken with sesame noodles. Real ales and good-value wines satisfy the drinkers.
