This grand old Victorian edifice, dating from 1882, remains one of Cornwall's hidden treasures. Built high on the cliffs above the harbour and waters of the Fowey estuary, it's a relaxing and peaceful retreat conveniently close to must-see sites like the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
The views from the luxuriously decorated restaurant are glorious – so tables by the window are at a premium. Well-crafted five-course dinners are fleshed out with an amuse-gueule, a mid-course 'granita of the day' and petit fours, and the kitchen takes account of Cornish produce – especially locally landed fish.
Among the starters, you might find seared scallops with apple-braised belly pork and saffron velouté or crab and turbot fishcakes, while main courses could take in roast rack of lamb with scallion and potato purée, braised red cabbage and polonaise jus or honey-glazed duck breast with buttered Savoy cabbage and Calvados jus. To round things off, order hot raspberry soufflé with thyme syrup and almond parfait.
