Mobile Food Guide Review of Spice CubeNewcastle's Gate complex (14 venues including a cinema, casino, bars and clubs) is the setting for the city's sexy new Indian star. Owner Jalf Ali has created something that is a world away from curry house clichés: it's cool, chic, ultra smart and very twenty-first century with its eye-catching colours, hard floors, bare polished tables and Punjabi 'Zee' music on a plasma screen in the lounge area. But style is just the beginning: the Spice Cube also delivers spot-on food, thanks to chef Dinesh Rawat who trained with Vivek Singh (currently top man at the high-ranking Cinnamon Club in London). What he offers is a mix of vividly flavoured tandooris and these-you-have-loved favourites (bhunas, rogan josh, tikka masala and the like) plus racy modern crossover ideas. Among the eye-catchers on the menu are king scallop pakoras with apple and cauliflower compote, duck salan (pan-seared duck breast in ginger and tamarind sauce on a spinach and potato cake) and nali korma (braised lamb shank with caramelised shallots and pilau rice). Light lunches are an innovative mix of wraps, masala burgers, 'naanwiches' and kebab rolls (perfect for express daytime snacking) and Spice Cube also offers a great little menu for kids, plus options for theatregoers and monthly 'gourmet' extravaganzas. The wine list is a fine match for the food, otherwise drink Indian beer, lassi or a fruit smoothie. Additional Restaurant Information for Spice Cube - Newcastle upon Tyne
