Jamie Oliver headed out west to set up the his latest venture, which stands 'on the beach' overlooking Watergate Bay, one of Cornwall's grooviest surfing destinations. It's a partnership between his Fifteen Foundation and the Cornwall Foundation of Promise charity and each year it gives 20 talented (but 'disadvantaged') local teenagers the opportunity to get into the kitchen and learn about professional cheffing.
The location is as hip as they come, there are jaw-dropping views of the two-mile stretch of sands and the Atlantic waves lap against the restaurant windows at high tide. Inside, the dining room has been done out in fashionable shades of black, grey and cream, with pink and red scribbles ('urban graffiti') adding a vibrant edge to things.
Breakfast kicks off the day, but remember it's first come, first served. Lunch consists of a simply organised assortment of rustic Italian dishes based on top-notch seasonal ingredients. Typically, you might find Port Looe crab bisque, pappardelle with Ruby Red beef and Chianti ragł, megrim sole with cockles and broad beans, plus desserts like grappa pannacotta with fresh cherries.
Dinner is a fixed-price tasting menu that runs to six courses and will set you back around £50 (around £90 if you opt for the wine package). Centrepieces could include slow-roast Ryeland lamb with beets, spring greens and pan gravy or fillet of Newlyn brill with girolles and asparagus ragł or fritto misto of summer vegetables with rouille.
