'My favourite place to eat in Scotland,' enthused one Mobile Food Guide correspondent about this tasteful little hotel. The poet Robbie Burns was born in Alloway, and Brig O' Doon House ('a stunning venue') is right at the heart of the tourist trail. It stands beside the old hump-backed bridge over the River Doon (setting for the comic climax of 'Tam O'Shanter') and is a much-sought-after choice for romantic weddings: the hotel's vaulted ballroom is one of the most impressive venues of its kind in Scotland.
Built in 1827, the house has been sympathetically upgraded over the years – although it's lost nothing of its unique atmosphere and still puts on a show with tartan and timbers everywhere. An open fire blazes in the beamed restaurant, which provides great views of the landscaped gardens leading down to the river.
