Combining the virtues of delicatessen and modern restaurant, Incanto occupies the old post office in Harrow-on-the-Hill and aims to provide a really friendly, open-minded environment for business people and families alike. It's also a good-looking venue, with a glass spiral staircase and full-length skylights catching the eye in the classily designed dining areas.
The kitchen focuses on traditional South Italian cuisine, with the emphasis firmly on hearty, homespun flavours and honest-to-goodness recipes. Seafood linguine is a regional classic, but the choice also extends to oven-baked halibut wrapped in a potato crust with red wine and balsamic reduction, 'stinco di maiale' (slow-cooked leg of pork with white wine vinegar sauce) and escalope of veal with caramelised root vegetables and leek sauce.
Warm chocolate tartlet with espresso sauce and Mascarpone is the bestselling dessert, although you can also get poached pear with cinnamon ice cream and crępes Alaska served with caramelised apples. One-course light lunches are a snip, and the well-chosen wine list focuses on Italy, with a few additions from France and Spain.
