Mobile Food Guide Review of The Portaferry Hotel

The Portaferry Hotel

Standing by the shores of Strangford Lough, opposite the Ferry Terminal, this personally run hotel started life as private dwellings in the eighteenth century and it still has the feel of a gentrified country house with Irish paintings on the walls, objets d'art and flower arrangements.

The kitchen is keen on Irish produce and makes telling use of local beef and lamb, mussels and oysters from Dundrum and venison from Finnebrogue for its regularly changing dinner menus. Start the ball rolling with – perhaps – Portagie prawn wontons with dipping sauce or warm crusted goats' cheese with beetroot and thyme salad before roast rack of lamb with a French bean croquette and rosemary jus or fillet of sea bass with cucumber and Noilly Prat. Straightforward desserts could include sticky toffee pudding with treacle sauce and the wide- ranging wine list offers plenty of choice across the range.
