The mighty Humber Bridge overlooks Richard and Lindsey Johns' pint-sized restaurant, which with has brought a touch of gastronomic class to the East Riding since opening its doors at the end of 2004. Small is not only beautiful, it's also highly effective here: the contemporary dining room seats no more than 20 people, Richard mans the stoves on his own and Lindsey runs the show out front. It works splendidly.
Supper menus change every few days and there are just three choices at each stage – but the quality is high. To open, you might choose seared fillet of wood pigeon with foie gras and wild rocket ahead of honey-glazed duck breast with apple purée and red wine sauce or roast wild sea bass (from Whitby) with cauliflower and lemon cream, potato and saffron oil. As a finale, opt for cheese or something sweet like lemon and lime posset with passion fruit.
On Sundays, tradition rules and the menu is flexible: have anything from a starter to the full works from a choice that extends to 'Irish stew' soup, roast fore rib of beef and brioche bread-and-butter pudding. Like everything else at Artisan, the wine list proves that quality matters more than size: the selection of just 20 bins is an exciting collection from artisan producers at competitive prices.
Artisan has been awarded some serious accolades, including the Yorkshire restaurant of the year 2008, Top UK 100 Restaurant, Top 40 Restaurant outside London and is currently the Which Good Food Guide Restaurant of the year North East Of England 2011. The first restaurant ever to win this award, in East Yorkshire.
