Review of Watergate Bay Hotel, The Brasserie, Newquay

Watergate Bay now ranks as Cornwall's funkiest surfing and water-sports hotspot, and this hotel is right at the centre of the action. It stands – literally – 'on the beach' and makes the most of legendary views; it's also run in tandem with the Extreme Sports Academy, which provides facilities for all manner of trendy pursuits ranging from wave-skiing to kite buggying.

The evening brasserie is perfect for chilling out, and the kitchen delivers a bright, fizzy menu with lots of interesting possibilities. Local seafood gets an airing with – say – squid tempura, lasagne of crab, avocado and corn salsa or pan-fried sea bass with buttered cabbage, smoked bacon velouté and gnocchi. Meat fans might go for chicken terrine with homemade piccalilli or roast sirloin steak with truffle mash, while desserts could feature baked lemon cheesecake or Watergate Bay 'chocolate trio'.

Sun lovers and beach addicts can get daytime refuelling at the Living Space café or the Beach Hut – 'just inches from the sand'.
