Deep in the Forest of Dean, within strolling distance of Clearwell Castle, this tranquil hotel did indeed start life as a Tudor farmhouse and it still boasts a full quota of rustic oak beams and exposed stonework as well as an unusual wooden spiral staircase. These days, however, it is best known for its terraces, gardens and 14 acres grounds (designated as an area of 'special scientific interest' because of its rare flora).
Local and seasonal ingredients show up well on the menu, which promises dishes such as collops of venison with sage and onion rösti, winter squash purée and redcurrant reduction, rosemary-scented rump of lamb with braised red cabbage and Williams potato, or line-caught pollock with pesto mash. To conclude, there are desserts such as dark chocolate and Baileys fondant or strawberry parfait with pistachio ice cream.
