Dating from 1667 or thereabouts, this well-cared-for inn is now a popular pit-stop for tourists and holidaymakers, within easy reach of the Peddar's Way, West Norfolk's lavender fields and the beaches of Hunstanton. A pair of ploughshares hang above the front door and the garden boasts a handsome conker tree.
Inside, there are low black beams and gin-trap light fittings in the bar, while the recently opened conservatory dining area has a more modern look thanks to soft colour schemes and gentle light from church candles. Starters of smoked haddock and shellfish risotto or chicken and apricot terrine with homemade piccalilli might precede beef bourguignon, confit of duck with roast baby beetroot or wild sea bass with pea mash and dill butter sauce.
Sandwiches and a few lighter dishes are also available in the bar, and the choice of seasonal desserts might include crème caramel with poached winter fruits or bread-and-butter pudding with apricot coulis. East Anglian real ales are on handpump and the wine list includes a decent selection by the glass.
