Review on The Westleton Crown
A great favourite with tourists and holidaymakers exploring the Suffolk Heritage Coast, the Westleton Crown is handily placed midway between Southwold and Aldeburgh within easy reach of Minsmere RSPB Reserve. The building itself can trace its origins back to the twelfth century, although it has been handsomely gentrified over the years.
The interior is as warm and welcoming as can be, with a log fire blazing in the bar and walls covered with photographs of local scenes, old rural implements and so on. There are four main eating areas - the conservatory, parlour, bar and brew room - and the same menu is offered throughout the place. Lunch brings a good choice of sandwiches, ploughman's and upbeat pub grub (smoked mackerel fishcakes on stir-fried vegetables, for example), and traditional roasts steal the limelight on Sundays.
Alternatively, dip into the full menu, which follows the seasons and takes full account of produce from Suffolk's larder. To begin, there might be terrine of home-smoked salmon or grilled sardines with potato and fennel salad, before steamed suet pudding packed with pork, apple and sage, Szechuan-glazed duck breast teriyaki, or roast fillet of halibut with broad beans and herb nage. The Crown's version of fish and chips is a bestseller, while desserts might include baked Alaska with blackberry sauce or warm gooseberry crumble tart. Three real ales are generally on tap and the wine list is bolstered by some fine 'cellar choices'.
